New York City had a turnout of 8 people, which included a birthmother and 7 adoptees. We were also blessed with beautiful 50 degree weather. We handed out 3 different types of articles, etc and were pleased to have the New York Daily News with us for most of our protest. We also had a Spanish speaking newspaper interview us and also a radio station, which conducted a phone interview. Most of the passersby were surprised to find out that adoptees are not allowed their birth records, even though they are adults. We encouraged others to pass on the literature and I left several copies of the Open Records article in the Vital Statistics office itself.
Two of our NY born adoptees asked for their birth records and were told that it didn't exist. We persisted and still, they walked away without that precious piece of paper. Maybe next year!
FYI - the Vital Records office moved to 125 Worth Street. We found out that day. :(
As far as contacting the press, I found that faxing a press release to your local associated press, to the attention of the daybook will get some results. Once that information is put onto the daybook, then all of the news sources: radio, TV, Newspaper, etc notice the event more than just a fax to their newsroom. We had a wide range of news coverage, which is exactly what we wanted.
Go NARD!
Take Care!
