Subject: Tucson report for NARD
Hi Damz,
Our belated NARD went quite well on Saturday... I arrived at Antigone Bookstore a little bit before 10am. Sue Tretter was waiting for me with a gaggle of GREAT signs that she had gotten made at a sign shop, and also some that we'd both done by hand. At about 10:10, my other volunteer (Keri Lenertz) showed up as well. The three of us put our signs and informational fliers about Bastard Nation, NARD, local search/reunion support resources, M58 info, Open Records: "Why its an issue", and "8 common misconceptions", the Oregonian's Curtis Endicott article, and Anita Walker-Field's article, etc. out for people to see and ask questions about.
We also had the adoptee rights petitions on clip boards, and collected about 100 signatures (will be sending those to WA this week).
Sue and I wore our BN tees, and Keri had a BN ? mark button on... lots of people stopped to ask what BN was all about. Very few were opposed to Open Records, or to the word "Bastard", something I was surprised (but delighted) by.
We passed out lots of fliers about Open Records too. We finally got kicked off our sidewalk spot at about 11:15am b/c they didn't want folks setting up shop there. They were really nice about it though, and the guy even took a few pictures of us with all of our signage (will send those along via attachment as soon as I get them developed).
So, we packed up our stuff, Sue headed home, and then Keri and I walked up and down 4th Ave. passing out fliers and getting people to sign the petitions, chatting about adoptee rights, etc. We did that till about 12:30pm.
All in all, it was a great couple of hours! Will definitly go back for the Spring (the 4th Ave Street Fair is twice a year, in Dec and in March or April).
Speaking of which, the organizers that asked us to move, gave us their biz card and told us to call on Monday (today) about getting a non-profit booth for the 4th Ave street fair in the Spring, or next winter. They have about 27 booths available for non-profits, with about 100 applicants for them. They put them all in a hat and draw the booths that way so that it's fair. All we have to do is get on the mailing list, provide our non-profit status letter, and hope for a spot! A booth would be sooooo great, cos we could be out there for all three days of the fair and really educated LOTS of people! Will let you know what I need once I've talked to the organizers today.
That's about it Damz, hope you had a nice weekend! Cheers,
Cheryl L. Richmond
