RUSH FOR OUR RECORDS: NATIONAL ADOPTEE RIGHTS DAY

ADOPTEES NATIONWIDE DEMAND EQUAL ACCESS TO VITAL RECORDS

Events nationwide: AL, AR, AZ, CA, GA, IL, MA, MO, MN, NY, NV, OK, OR, PA  and more

On DECEMBER 3rd, 1998, any Oregon-born adoptee over the age of 21 will be able to receive a copy of his or her original birth certificate for the first time since 1957. This right has been restored thanks to the recent passage of Ballot Measure 58, the Adoptee Rights Initiative. Oregon adoptees from all over the U.S. will be visiting and contacting the Department of Vital Statistics on December 3rd to legally request a copy of their original birth certificates.

Bastard Nation, the leading national adoptee rights organization, is helping coordinate events at Vital Statistics offices nationwide to show solidarity with the adoptees of Oregon and to celebrate National Adoptee Rights Day: a day dedicated to supporting dignity and ending government-sanctioned shame in adoption.  14 states and over 20 sites will be participating in this year’s inaugural event.

On Thursday, December 3rd, adoptees will be walking into their local Departments of Vital Statistics, County Clerks, or applicable offices to apply for a copy of their original birth certificates, just as adult adoptees in Kansas, Alaska, and Oregon can. Adoptees nationwide will be visiting, faxing, and calling for their original birth certificates on this day. Adoptees will be available at Rush sites in cities around the nation to speak out on the injustice of permanently sealed records and what we can do to end this system.  Among these adoptees will be those whose birthdates were deliberately changed, those who were unable to obtain passports due to amended birth certificates, and those who discovered they were adopted as adults “by accident.”
