Nameless Persons: Legal Discrimination Against Non-Marital Children in the United States
by Martha T. Zingo and Kevin E. Early

Hardcover
List: $55.00 -- Amazon.com Price: $55.00
Published by Praeger Pub Text
Publication date: September 1994
ISBN: 0275947114

This study examines the legal discrimination suffered in the United States by children born out of wedlock. The authors analyze the Supreme Court's equal protection birth status decisions from 1968 to 1992 and, in a case-by-case analysis, trace the development of the Court's rulings, examine the pattern of equal protection tests utilized, and evaluate the consistency of the Court's position. In addition, the work examines the related discrimination suffered by the families of non-marital children, especially single parents and alternative family units, and concludes that it is impossible to gain full equality for children born out of wedlock unless equality is also gained for their family unit. Toward these ends, the authors suggest a feminist jurisprudence as a methodology for addressing the underlying issue at the crux of birth status distinctions.

Rita Mae Brown never had to come out of the closet because she was never in it. Within her garrulous, wisecracking family, she was always an outsider -- called "Il" by her mother because she was the illegitimate child of a relative, adopted as an infant by the Browns. Loved but isolated, she was a child more at ease with animals than with people and a frequent pawn in the outrageous battles between her mother and her aunt, the mythic Juts and Wheezie of the novels Six of One and Bingo.

What was never an issue, though, was her sexuality. Julia Brown accepted that her daughter was gay. At college it was different: Rita Mae's lesbianism and support of civil rights jeopardized the education she craved. Transferring to New York University, she got involved in the fledgling women's movement, where her outspokenness got her thrown out of NOW. An experiment in communal living was an inevitable bust. Then came Rubyfruit Jungle, the scandalous classic that made Rita Mae Brown the most famous openly gay person in America.

A writing career in Hollywood followed, plus a love affair that was the most memorable of her life -- all this before her relationship with tennis champion Martina Navratilova brought her transatlantic notoriety as the woman who might singlehandedly destroy women's tennis.

Through it all Rita Mae Brown has stayed grounded -- by a fierce work drive, a connection to her Southern heritage, and an irreverent sense of humor that flavors every page of this irresistibly readable memoir. In a me-too world, she has remained a true original.

Waiting to Forget
by Margaret Moorman

Hardcover
List: $25.00 -- Amazon.com Price: $20.00 -- You Save: $5.00 (20%)
Published by W W Norton & Co
Publication date: August 1,1996

Amazon.com Books: When Margaret Moorman was 16 she became pregnant, endured the stigma of teenage pregnancy, and was essentially forced by her parents and society into first a cover-up and then the giving up of her son for adoption. She was told to get over it and forget. As Moorman reveals in this stark memoir, forgetting was not possible. At age 40, with a daughter whom she could not bear to be separated from without anxiety, she confronted the past, began searching for her son, and wrote this searing condemnation of the social prejudice that had trapped her as a 16-year-old. She writes with angry clarity of the strangling embrace of cultural mores, and of the "climates of approval or disapproval" that remove the possibility of choice and create feelings of guilt.

The New York Times Book Review, Jane O'Reilly: . . . uniquely enlightening because the author has so effectively made the connection between the personal and the political . . . a revelation and a comfort.
