Action Alert!February 15, 2002 BABY DUMP LEGISLATION NEEDS DUMPING IN NEBRASKA!URGENT ACTION NEEDED TO STOP LB-1283 IN THE NEBRASKA JUDICIARY COMMITTEE ON FEBRUARY 20, 2002LB-1283, which would legalize anonymous baby dumping at safe havens in
Nebraska has been introduced in their State Legislature. If passed, it
will become legal to discard infants up to 45 days old at emergency care facilities
with no questions asked. The Judiciary Committee will hear the bill on
Wednesday, February 20, 2002. Your help is needed to stop the spread
of these egregious safehaven programs to another state! Your letters,
phone calls, e-mails, and FAXes helped stop baby dump legislation from
passing in Virginia this month, and it can be stopped in Nebraska too!
Anonymous baby dumping is a feel-good, band-aid approach to the problem
of infant abandonment. The programs have been abysmal failures
wherever enacted. They do not work, and they encourage unsafe infant
delivery and endanger the lives of both mothers and babies.
Furthermore, they violate the human rights of the abandoned infant, and
open the door to the resurfacing of the most heinous abuses of the
past, including black market baby selling. Secret baby handoffs with
no questions asked are no solution and no substitute for the safe
placement of infants and assurances of the health and well-being of
both mother and child.
