Action Alert!May 01, 2003 URGENT: HELP STOP A DISCLOSURE VETO BILL IN ALBERTABastards unite to stop affront to adoptee rights and dignity in Canada.Alberta Legislative Assembly Bill 24: The Child Welfare Amendment Act,
purports to open records to adoptees, but contains a disclosure veto,
Section 74.2(4), "prohibiting the release of personal information in
the orders, certificates and documents." Bill 24 was recently amended,
adding another amendment, Section 74.2, subsection (9), which will give
adoptive parents the power to veto the release of information about
their adult child to their birth parents if the adoptee is unaware of
their adoption or if the adoptive parents believe releasing records
would be harmful to their adult children. Bill 24 has passed second
reading and could soon be brought to a third and final reading in the
Legislative Assembly. PLEASE WRITE, FAX, E-MAIL, or CALL the Assembly
Members. URGE THEM TO VOTE AGAINST THIS BILL UNLESS THESE TWO SECTIONS
ARE REMOVED. Bill 24 treats adult adoptees as if they are perpetual children who
must have their birth and adoptive parents' permission to access their
own birth certificates. It will move adult adoptees back into the dark
ages. Bastard Nation urges you to fight against these demeaning laws.
ASSEMBLY MEMBERS ARE LISTENING TO US. During the last hearing, several
members talked about how much mail they had received concerning this
section of the bill. One Assembly member said: "Thank you, Mr.
Chairman. I have a few comments on this particular bill that I would
like to share with the Assembly, and they are e-mails I got from
persons who were interested in the part of the bill that talks about
opening up adoption records. I think it is important to share with the
House what was said, because this is the first time in my experience
that a bill in this Legislature has drawn so much attention from out of
province".
