Stacey Stevens: Is this the Sort of Person to be Leading the Battle for Adoptee Rights?

The following is the correspondence between BN MidAtlantic Regional Director and DE Coalition member Stacey Stevens.

First, CK's response to having been told that the bill was to be amended at the very last minute to include a disclosure veto for birthmothers.

Dear Supporters of HB 522

This is PRECISELY the kind of amendment I was speaking of in my last
post. This is what is referred to as a disclosure veto and is totally
unacceptable to Bastard Nation as it does not acknowledge our
unconditional right to our own birth records. I have had Carolyn's word
-- in writing -- that this bill would be pulled rather than compromise
with this type of amendment. If you go ahead with this, Bastard Nation
and I personally will consider ourselves to have been betrayed, and
believe me, you don't want us angry at you. That is not a threat, it is
a promise. This will be the reason for the entire nation to know just why
BN will not ever again support any open records bill unless we are in
control of it. I don't think you want to be held responsible for that.
If you think you could have gotten as far as you did without us, you are
mistaken. To betray us at the last moment, just to get the bill passed,
is unconscienable.

Dear Cynthia-

First is Carolyn gave you her assurances in writing then she was mistaken
they were not hers to give. There were more people involved and hers
wasn't the only voice to be reckoned with.

Second we are doing what is in the best interest of all involved by
letting this amendment through. If bastard nation no longer will help any other
state let me say from the bottom of my heart thank you. Your organization
has been nothing but an embarasment to those of us trying to get our
rights recognized. As far as your threats of being the ones respondsible for BN
not joining any other state. We now have it in writing will you really stand
by your decision. I believe that most will thank us.

As far as bastard nation being respondsible for the state of delaware
listening and passing the bill thus far keep patting yourself on your
preverbial back, because you were never invited nor wanted by the
majority of us that has been fighting for our rights. The one person you represented
never deemed it necessary to show up to any of the hearings. That person
may wish to pat you on your preverbial back but don't look for the rest of
us. Your presence was barely tolerated by us and the legislators of this
state.

You know when your organization first came out I felt you were one of the
best sources for information, I didn't particularly like your politics
but to each his own. Now that I have first hand been exposed to your politics I
really don't like it but was polite in my dealings with you, everyone has
a right to his or her own opinions on the issues. But to threaten, "and
believe me, you don't want to make us angry at you", you have shown to
me that your organization cares not for the adoptees that we are fighting
for the rights of, but only of the prestege and notariety that comes with
jumping into a fight. Your organization has in fact become nothing better than
the NCFA.

Reply of Damsel Plum, BN Executive Committee member:

Dear CK and Delaware lobbyists,

Duly noted. The degree of calumny, illiteracy and arrogant ignorance in
Stacey's letter was indeed appalling and I can only hope that this calibre
of individual is but an abberation in the overall lobbying scheme there in
Delaware. I trust it is.

You can be sure that outrage against any disclosure vetoes will flood the
emails, faxes and phone lines of Delware Senators all day tomorrow.

Good evening, friends.

Yours most sincerely,

Stacey Replies:

Dear Ms. Plum,

I wrote in responds to a threatening letter by one of your representatives to
myself and others fighting for the rights of all adoptees in the state of
delaware. I felt her letter was uncalled for and stated my opinion as to the
nature of your organization's roll in all of this.

The responds I have recieved from both your organizations representative and
yourself do nothing to change my feelings about your organization and the so
called power that your organization claims. You have personally attacked me,
and your representative has threated me bodily harm for stating no more than
my opinions of the threatening letter she sent. If disagreeing with your
organization is against the law please provide the proof that I need.
