American Greetings Pulls Card after Intense Internet-Spawned Campaign

After an intense Internet campaign waged against an offensive Valentine's card put out by American Greetings, AG has finally issued a formal statement that the card will be discontinued. The card implies both that adoptees are unloved and that adoptive parents are not an adoptee's "real" parents. Many members of Bastard Nation called AG and pointed out that such "jokes" would not be tolerated in a mainstream greeting card company's repertoire if they were aimed at African-Americans, Jews or physically-challenged people, for example. The story broke nationally this week on the AP wire.

The time has come for adult adoptees to stand up for their rights in all fora. We will not stand being ridiculed as a class in greeting cards, nor will be stand for state governments depriving us of information to which every other citizen has easy access - basic documents pertaining to us. We will not stand for being viewed as a suspect class against whom restraining orders can be issued with undue cause. If these issues mean something to you, join Bastard Nation and let your voice be heard!
